Why retailers are divided over AI shopping agents

Marketing Tech News compares retailers' approaches to external shopping agents: formal integrations, retailer-controlled assistants and restrictions on unauthorised access. It describes Shopify merchants retaining merchant-of-record responsibilities and choosing supported AI channels, alongside different account, loyalty and checkout models. This is comparative reporting on several initiatives, not a single October 5 rollout or proof of universal support, safety or sales growth.

Shopify extends WebMCP support to checkout for AI agents

The Paypers reports that Shopify is rolling out WebMCP checkout tools to eligible merchants. Browser agents can inspect and update checkout, then submit an order only after buyer authorization, including Shop Pay transactions. The tools extend earlier product-search and cart support; WebMCP is a proposed standard, not universal browser-agent compatibility.

Fanatics Names Afterpay to Preferred BNPL List; Landmark Global’s Shopify App Debuts

Digital Transactions reports that Fanatics selected Afterpay as its preferred buy-now-pay-later provider across Fanatics.com, Lids.com, NBAStore.com, NHLShop.com and associated sites. Separately, Landmark Global launched a Shopify App Store application that lets merchants configure international shipping, calculate costs in real time, offer shipping options, generate labels and manage fulfillment within Shopify.
