Remitly® is an international money transfer platform, popular with US-based expats, international students, and immigrants who send money overseas.

Remitly used to offer financial products like Passbook, which helped users manage their money across borders, but this was discontinued in 2023.¹ Now, Remitly offers the Remitly Debit Card to facilitate payments abroad.

We take a closer look at the Remitly Debit Card, including everything you need to know about Remitly’s features, fees, and transaction limits.

Sending money to family back home? Open a Wise account to send, spend, and receive your money worldwide in over 40 local currencies. Let’s dive in!

What is the Remitly Wallet Debit Card and how does it work?

The Remitly Debit Card is a useful way to spend money overseas. You can use your virtual or physical debit card to spend anywhere that Visa® is accepted.

Your debit card is tied to your Remitly Cash Account, where you can store, send, and receive your money via the app.

Any purchases will come out of your Cash Account balance. This means you’ll need to add money to your Remitly Cash Account wallet to spend in-store or online using your card.²

Who is it for?

The Remitly Debit Card is available for all Remitly customers with a Remitly One membership. This subscription service offers additional benefits for users, such as Send Now, Pay Later features and monthly cashback rewards.³

In particular, the Remitly Debit Card is aimed at US-based expats and immigrants who use Remitly to send money back home to friends and family.

You can use your Remitly wallet to send a debit card deposit to friends abroad, or withdraw cash at US ATMs using your linked Visa debit card.²

How to add funds

To start using your Remitly Debit Card, you’ll first need to add funds to your Remitly Cash Account. You can use a linked US debit card or bank account to add money to your wallet for free.⁴

You can then use your Remitly Debit Card to send, spend, or withdraw money anywhere that Visa is accepted.

Key features, limits, and hidden costs

Here’s everything you need to know about the Remitly Wallet Debit Card, including key features, limits, and hidden costs to look out for.

Key features and transaction limits

You can use your Remitly Debit Card to pay in-store and online. You can even withdraw cash at ATMs in the US, as long as those machines accept Visa cards.

Here’s how to access your card details via the Remitly app:

Step 1. Navigate to the “Card” tab

Step 2. Click “Details”

Step 3. Verify your identity using Face ID, Touch ID, or your PIN to view your debit card details²

You can also add your Remitly card to your Apple® or Google® wallet. This is a convenient option for online and in-store debit card purchases. Here’s how to add your Remitly Debit Card to Apple Pay or Google Pay:

Step 1. Navigate to the “Card” tab and select your Remitly Debit Card

Step 2. Click “More”

Step 3. Select “Add to Wallet” and follow any on-screen instructions²

Remitly’s debit card transaction limits may vary. You can check your spending limits in the Remitly app:

Step 1. Navigate to the “Card” tab

Step 2. Select your Remitly Debit Card

Step 3. Click “More” and then “View Card Limits” to view your daily and monthly spending limits²

Remitly’s hidden costs

The Remitly Debit Card may trigger some hidden costs. In particular, if you use your debit card to send money abroad, Remitly’s international transfer fees and currency conversion costs will likely apply.

Remitly offers zero fees and a promotional exchange rate for first-time customers, but this only applies to your first payment via the app. The exact offer you can access will also depend on how and where you want to send your money.

After your first transfer, you’ll pay Remitly’s regular exchange rate for international payments, along with any transfer fees.⁵ The provider’s exchange rate may include a markup on the standard rate for currency conversion.

You may also need a subscription to Remitly One to access the Remitly Debit Card. This costs 9.99 USD per month.³

Remitly Debit Card vs bank account

The Remitly Debit Card isn’t the same as an international bank account. You can add money to your Remitly wallet to facilitate transfers and purchases, but you won’t get the same flexibility as with an international debit card.

You can’t hold money in multiple currencies at once or receive payments into your account in local currency. This means you’ll likely pay currency conversion charges for using your Remitly Debit Card to spend in foreign currencies.

Looking for global flexibility? How Wise compares

Wise is your flexible international spending alternative! Open a Wise account to hold, convert, and manage your money in over 40 different currencies at once.

Send money to family in Indian rupees (INR) or pay for groceries in Canadian dollars (CAD) – all from just one account.

Wise uses the mid-market exchange rate for international transfers in and out of your account. That’s the standard ‘fair’ rate for currency conversion, with no added markups, hidden fees, or subscription costs.

You can even use your Wise card to pay overseas. Order your free virtual card in seconds to start spending like a local in over 150 countries and over 40 currencies.

The Remitly Debit Card is a handy way to send money to family abroad or withdraw cash in the US, but you’ll need to look into any hidden fees and costs for using your debit card overseas.

If you regularly send money outside the US, it’s important to choose the right card for your cross-border needs. You need a debit card provider that offers flexibility, local currency spending options, and low costs for international payments.
